B&O Espresso Opens Shop in Ballard, Adds Gluten Free Treats!

There’s a new kid on the Leary block – our very favorite and long time residents of Capitol Hill did a hop, skip and a jaunt over to the buzz-happy Ballard! And boy are we happy to have them! B&O Espresso isn’t just espresso and they aren’t just desserts, they are the finest espresso and desserts in Seattle. For example, their chai latte’s are freshly brewed chai, made by the owner himself. They have mousses and cookies and towers of cakes. They have chocolates and milkshakes that are tantalizing to taste.

Yes, some of their menu has been discontinued, along with their late night food-munching hours. They do, however, offer early morning pastries, brunch, espresso and desserts. The venu also has a wide array of gluten free desserts like the Sarah Bernhardt, Crème brûlée, double chocolate chip cookies, mousse, Marzipan and my personal favorite – the chai milkshake.

If you ever spent any time in B&O’s Capitol Hill location, you would have noticed the French posters and tributes, colorful Cap Hill patrons and the lavish decor collected from vintage styles over the years. While the new location is smaller and not of the same vibe, it’s still the same friendly people and the same fantastic treats.

When we say best, we mean THE BEST. Homegrown Sustainable Sandwich Shop is blowing our gluten free minds, being one of the few shops in Seattle that makes gluten free sandwiches for breakfast and lunch. Even better their sandwiches are damn good, in the I-want-to-eat-til-I-puke good.

It’s often we settle for anything gluten free, despite whether it tastes good, just for the pure fact that we are hungry and need some kind of sustenance. So discovering a rare gem of a shop that makes a mouth-watering sandwich that is just as good as the real thing is an exciting food-orgasmic day.

Homegrown serves with a mission – “not only to create sandwiches out of sustainable ingredients but also to make sandwich creation sustainable itself.” What does that mean exactly? Homegrown buys from local dairy producers, farmers and meat vendors. Everything is organic and free range. Homegrown also makes their own bread, in-house.

What kind of sandwiches do they serve? For breakfast (featured in this blog) they make a delicious bacon, egg & Beecher’s cheese breakfast sandwich with garlic aioli. They also have a ham, cheese and egg sandwich, avocado and egg sandwich, lox and cream cheese and other items like oatmeal.

Lunch items include turkey, bacon and avocado, hummus and roasted peppers, roast pork, reuben revised, ham and cheese, squash, portobello and goat cheese. Not all together of course, but those items are just a sampling of what they offer.

Homegrown Sustainable Sandwich Shop has locations in Fremont, Capitol Hill and Queen Anne. We rank Homegrown as the best gluten free sandwich shop in Seattle, so be sure to sample a sandwich soon.

Cupcake Royale Perfects the Gluten Free Cupcake.

Gluten Free Flourless Deathcake Gluten Free Chocolate CupcakeWe are happy to report another cupcake retail chain is catering to the gluten challenged folk of Seattle.

Cupcake Royale has perfected the chocolate gluten free cupcake. They tell me the flour consists of Bob’s Red Mill gluten free flour and is available with a variety of frosting tops.

When we were in the other day they had this yummy gluten free cake with vanilla and chocolate buttercream frosting at the Capitol Hill location. We devoured them both! The cake is moist and chocolaty, while the frosting is a sugary dance of delight.

Another fun tidbit is Cupcake Royale makes their gluten free cupcakes for special orders, so if you are wanting a dozen or dozens, they will make them for you with any frosting tops or a mix of several.

Essential Baking Company Has Gone Gluten Free.

Essential Baking Company has long been known for their specialty artisan breads. Based out of Seattle, this crafty crust-maker has decided to offer a new line of gluten free sandwich breads that are a little different than other gluten free breads on the market. We have found many of the sliced sandwich breads available are the equivalent to eating wonder bread. While delicious in many respects, they offer no nutritional gain or fiber count and a high starch content.

Essential bakery has three options that contain fiber, sunflower seeds and flax seeds. These delicious gluten free bread options are quite sustainable and definitely a healthier option for sandwiches. The company tells me all of their gluten free breads are soy, dairy and nut free as well. They sell a Gluten Free Seeded Cinnamon Raisin, Gluten Free Sunny Seeded White and Gluten Free Super Seeded Multi-Grain. Essential Bakery also has gluten free rolls and more gluten free products rolling out soon.

All gluten free products are available at PCC locations throughout Seattle and other grocery stores. Please visit their website for more information on locations. Check out their video on gluten free breads!

Trophy Cupcakes Now Offering Gluten Free Red Velvet Cupcakes.

Yeah you read that right! Trophy Cupcakes has announced their first gluten-free cupcake is red velvet. Apparently their bakers have been testing and tasting a gluten-free option for quite some time and have finally gotten the perfect cupcake to offer their Seattle gluten-free customers.

We are pretty excited to say the least. We had the opportunity to sample this delicious cupcake yesterday and it is absolute heaven. The red velvet cupcake is perfectly moist, while the frosting is a cream cheese delight.

This gluten-free red velvet cupcake will be available all of January at every retail location. Get one while they are still making them!

New Seattle Gluten Free Pastry Chef Coming to Whole Foods.

There is a new Seattle gluten free kid on the block, Tarte Nouveau, run by Shelley Baumgarten of Seattle. We ran across her booth at the Fremont Sunday Market last weekend and got a chance to see all of her goodies. To name a few, she makes lemon bars, cupcakes, brownies, tartes, and other delicious treats.

Her treats will be available at Whole Foods in August, so be on the look out for her brand! Products they plan on carrying are tarts (dessert and savory), cupcakes, Madeleine’s, Eclairs and brownies. Pricing will be competitive with other gluten free products.

“It’s my total belief that everyone deserves great dessert, especially individuals with food allergies because we struggle so much to keep ourselves healthy,” says Baumgarten.

Baumgarten says she uses a mix of gluten free flours from Bob’s Red Mill and Xanthum Gum. She also fulfills orders for individuals having parties, special celebrations or personal orders.  She can be reached by email, tarte.nouveau@gmail.com or by phone T 206-524-3020 or 206-949-2163. She welcomes special order requests by stopping by her booth at the Fremont Sunday Market.

Her baking background: When she was a child, her mother would take her to a very fine department store that had an incredible bakery.  She was mesmerized by the rows of gorgeous pastries and other baked goods.  This planted the seed for her to try her hand at baking, then discovered she truly loved it, even as a young child. Later, as an adult, her doctor told her to stay off gluten, so she decided to attempt gluten-free baking. One year later and after a year of product development (and sending tons of samples with her husband to his Boeing job for taste testing) she launched Tarte Nouveau. She will celebrate the company’s first birthday this coming September.

Featured Gluten Free Seattle Pie Maker – Jodee’s Desserts

One of my favorite pie spots in Seattle is a nice gluten free dessert pie shop called Jodee’s Desserts. Not only are they gluten free, they are dairy free, and low-glycemic as well. Everything is made out of coconut, fruits, and veggies, all blended and uncooked.

My favorite items are the carrot cake, pumpkin pie, key lime pie, banana cream pie, and Tiramisu. They also have chocolate mousse pie, chocolate cherry pie, chocolate malt pie, pecan praline pie, peppermint patty pie, and other seasonal flavors.

Jodee’s Desserts also hand make smoothies, coffee, chocolates, and soups.

Jodee’s takes extreme pride in hand-making raw, organic dessert pie products. They use only the purest Organic products. As a part of a complete awareness to product purity, they use the Tensui Water Filtration System (www.TensuiWater.com) in all their pie preparations. Their dessert pies are blended, without the need for baking, which sustains a nutritionally rich product. I can attest, the results are simply some of the most delicious pies I have tasted.

This Seattle gluten free location is relatively new but I’ve already lost count of how many times I’ve been in. I don’t feel like I’ve eaten too much sugar after having one of Jodee’s treats, which is something I have to think about since I’m pre-diabetic.

Featured Seattle Gluten-Free Bakery – Wheatless in Seattle

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I haven’t made it down to Kaili McIntyre’s Wheatless in Seattle in quite some time, but was able to make it the other day to pick up a gluten free chocolate mocha cake I ordered for my husband’s birthday.

Kaili is one of the few gluten free bakeries who does it well. So well in fact, you can hardly see or taste the difference between a gluten free item verses a gluten item. She gets creative too – maple bacon donuts, pumpkin chocolate chip bread, spinach and goat cheese pinwheels – she bakes the stuff that most regular bakers do and could never do without regular flour. That makes Kaili special.

She really has come a long way since her first little Seattle gluten free restaurant in Edmonds. I used to drive 40 minutes out of my way just to get a gluten free pizza from her. At the time (6 years ago) she was the only place who had gluten free anything.

Now she and her crew bake up the most delicious gluten free breads, donuts, sweet breads, hamburger buns, pizza crusts, cookies, and even brownie pops. Her most recent new bread flavors are cardamom for Christmas and goat cheese and carmelized onion bread (drool).

Kaili really has changed Seattle in many ways. Many local Seattle gluten free restaurants purchase wholesale breads from her. Before her influence, us gluten intolerant folks didn’t have any options. As with any original thinker come followers, so now many restaurants have a choice of what gluten free item they’d like to carry, but many remain loyal to Wheatless in Seattle to keep their dollars local.

The Wheatless in Seattle store has changed to support Kaili McIntyre’s growing wholesale business, she has shut down the retail portion of her store and now only offers special retail orders that can be picked up on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Wheatless in Seattle has recently gone rice-free and now uses Sorghum flour. Many of their products are egg, soy, dairy, and corn free.

Tips For Having A Very Happy Gluten Free Thanksgiving

Gluten Free Pumpkin Pie

The holiday season is my favorite time of year, hands down. All the yummy breads, desserts, and meats along with family gatherings, warm fires, and classic movies – who could not love it!

Being gluten free doesn’t stop me from thoroughly enjoying the holidays – here’s how I do it.

Turkey: Obviously, my family doesn’t stuff the turkey with a gluten stuffing. With Udi’s Gluten Free Bread, Rudi’s Gluten-Free Breads, Wheatless in Seattle bread, and Glutino’s bread crumbs we have lots of bread crumb options for making gluten free stuffing. Jules Gluten Free has a great Thanksgiving stuffing recipe that I highly recommend.

Organic Creamery Goat Cheese

Yams: Most Thanksgiving baked yam dishes are gluten free, but not sugar free. I never really understood why it’s tradition to bake mashed yams with brown sugar and then marshmallows on top. Yams are already so sweet on their own! Here is my Thanksgiving Day Yam Masher Recipe -

6-8 Yams (Baked or steamed, then mashed)
1-2 packages of Goat Cheese (my favorite is Organic Creamery Goat Cheese)
Technique: Mix in goat cheese when the yams are still warm so the cheese blends in. That’s it! So easy!

Mashed Potatoes: Are naturally gluten-free. Add a little milk and garlic and voila! You have light and fluffy mashers!

Next up is Gravy: If you are used to making your gravy with wheat flour, it’s easy to change to an all purpose gluten free flour or corn starch. Both thicken gravy just as well as wheat flour.

Bread Rolls: A couple weekends ago I took a class from Jules Gluten Free that taught us how to make gluten free beer bread rolls. They were simply put, the best rolls I have ever tasted. That said I am always experimenting with mixing Jules flour with quinoa flour, so I can get more fiber, but you mine as well go for it on Thanksgiving and bake the real

Gluten Free Beer Bread Rolls

thing.

Vegetables: In my family we usually make green bean casserole with gluten free cream of mushroom soup and crispy onions baked on top. But now we just opt to steam green beans to reduce the amount fat and calories.

Mediterranean Snack Gluten Free Lentil Crackers

Snacks: Of course there are lots of snack options out there, most involve cheese and crackers, veggies, fruit, and/or cured meats. Obviously, most of these items are gluten free, except crackers. My favorite crackers are Mediterranean Snack’s Gluten Free Rosemary Herb Lentil Crackers.

Desserts: The best part of Thanksgiving are the desserts! Let’s see there is pecan pie, pumpkin pie, pumpkin cheesecake, and whipping cream as the main staples. If you’re creative then apple pie is thrown into the mix, along with cookies, and cobblers. The list is endless!

Jules Gluten Free has a great gluten free crust, if you are hinkering to make your own crust. She also has a fabulous graham cracker mix for the cheesecake variety. I personally don’t have time to make crusts, unless I’m baking something like apple or berry pies. Whole Foods has their own brand of gluten free crusts that are absolutely flawless. Flying Apron (tends to be vegan) and few other brands sell pre-made pies and crusts out of Whole Foods and PCC in Seattle.
